A total of 47 Egyptian universities have earned spots in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for sustainability, according to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. This figure represents an increase from 38 institutions last year, with nine universities appearing on the list for the first time.
The ministry noted that the growing participation demonstrates a stronger commitment among local higher education institutions to evaluate and document their green practices. The ranked institutions comprise government, private, national, and technological universities.
Alexandria University maintained its spot as the top-performing Egyptian institution, securing 107th place globally. October 6 University followed in second place nationally at 220th globally, while Sohag University took third place nationally at 245th globally. Other ranked universities include Benha University, New Mansoura University, Beni Suef University, Ain Shams University, Minya University, Zagazig University, and Benha National University.
Several institutions stood out in specific categories. Minya University led in environment and infrastructure, Benha University topped the energy and climate change indicator, Sohag University ranked first in water and in education and research, and October 6 University led in sustainable transport.
The 2026 assessment evaluates institutions across seven metrics: infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, education and research, and governance and digital transformation. The governance and digital transformation metric was added this year to evaluate the impact of digital tools on university administration and society.
Higher Education Minister Abdel-Aziz Konsowa welcomed the rising participation, stating that the ministry supports campus sustainability initiatives and aims to elevate the global standing of Egyptian universities. Ministry spokesperson Adel Abdel-Ghaffar also pointed to ongoing improvements in research quality, resource efficiency, and sustainable infrastructure across local campuses.
