Slovenian president visits Cairo University and urges international action on Gaza

Visiting Cairo University, Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar called for international intervention in Gaza and reforms to the United Nations.

Visiting Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar called for concerted international intervention to halt civilian casualties and humanitarian violations in the Gaza Strip during a lecture at Cairo University.

Speaking to an audience on Wednesday, the Slovenian president stated that the global community must not ignore ongoing conflicts and civilian suffering. She argued that several nations are overlooking events in Gaza and emphasized that countries must collaborate to end the humanitarian crisis. She added that her stance on the Palestinian issue is driven by legal and humanitarian obligations, noting that she has consistently raised the matter with European leaders.

President Musar also drew attention to the severe humanitarian emergency in Sudan, stating that the plight of its population requires shared international responsibility and must not be forgotten.

Turning to global governance, the Slovenian leader advocated for institutional reforms within the United Nations and the UN Security Council. She pointed out that the current veto power held by the five permanent members can hinder substantive resolutions and prevent timely responses to international emergencies. She called for a genuine review of decision-making mechanisms to balance the influence of major powers with the responsibility to maintain peace and protect civilians.

Cairo University, led by President Mohamed Sami Abdel Sadek, welcomed the head of state to its campus. The institution highlighted the visit as a reflection of its historical and academic standing as a regional hub for cultural dialogue and intellectual exchange.
