Egypt expands higher education landscape as university count reaches 138 institutions

Egypt's higher education sector expanded from 50 to 138 universities since 2013, backed by a sixfold budget increase and a growing student population.

Egypt's higher education sector has experienced rapid growth, with the total number of universities increasing from 50 in 2013 to 138 institutions by 2026. This expansion reflects strategic national investments aimed at linking higher education with sustainable development and labor market demands.

The diverse higher education network now encompasses a wide variety of institutional models across the country.

  • 28 public universities
  • 38 private universities
  • 32 national universities
  • 14 technological universities
  • 9 branches of leading European universities located in the New Capital

Financial commitments to the sector have scaled up significantly over the same period. The budget of the Ministry of Higher Education grew more than sixfold, rising from 24.5 billion Egyptian pounds (EGP) in 2013 to 161.182 billion Egyptian pounds (EGP) for the current fiscal year.

Student enrollment currently stands at approximately four million individuals, including secondary school graduates, technical diploma holders, and students with Arab and foreign credentials. Projections indicate that the student population will reach 5.6 million by 2032 as academic programs continue to attract both domestic and international applicants.
